Commercial adverts increase the level of consumption of commodities through branding. Branding helps consumers to associate certain commodities with certain qualities. Messages used in advertising are often paid for by sponsors and they are viewed through various media outlets.

Different media outlets are used to air including direct mail, magazines, television, text messages, newspapers, the internet, and radio. Commercial and non-commercial advertisers are the two major kinds of advertisers in existence today. Like the name suggests, commercial advertisers are involved with advertising consumer commodities and they are usually businesses.

Non-commercial advertisers advertise non-consumer products, and services. Non-commercial advertisers include religious organizations, interest groups, political parties, and governmental agencies. They may employ public service announcement and other free modes of persuasion. The estimated global expenditure on advertising was 592.43 billion US Dollars in 2015. Internationally, four main advertising conglomerates command the industry. These are WPP, Publicis, Interpublic, and Omnicom.

Any medium can be used to advertise product and services. Media used for commercial advertising include wall paintings, cinema, web banners, mobile telephone screens, billboards, town criers, skywriting, in-flight advertisements, bathrooms stalls, and posters among others. There are many types of advertising used in Belize. Some of them include television, radio, informercials, online, domain name, press, billboard, mobile billboard, in-store, coffee cup, street, and sheltered outdoor advertising among others.

Regulation in the advertisement industry has always been important as a way of protecting public interests. Restriction of the advertisement of tobacco on television is an example of regulation in the industry. Advertising to children is an area of great contention in the European zone.
