OOH Advertising And Its Forms

By Ina Hunt

Advertisements can reach consumers when they are out of their homes. This known as out of home advertising, also called OOH advertising. The main aim of this type of promotion is to reach consumers who are on the move, out in public places and in social and commercial surroundings such as malls. It has four main categories: billboards, street furniture, transit, and alternative.

Billboard promotion is a long-time out of home marketing format that has seen significant growth over the years. Though traditional billboards are still common, digital billboard displays have been installed and they too are becoming popular. Billboards still remains as one of the most dominant forms of outdoor advertisement, taking up a sizable chunk of the out of home marketing market. They generate a lot of revenue hence their popularity.

Street furniture advertisement is another form of out of home publicity. It is common mostly in urban centers. It is most visible in newspaper stands, bicycle shelters, bus shelters, retail outlets as well as malls. They are placed in close proximity to pedestrians and shoppers to make more visible for eye-view. This form is beneficial to the community since it provides them with amenities such as bus shelters. Also, the building and maintenance of these amenities is not the responsibility of the community but rather that of street furniture companies.

Transit advertising is whereby advertisements are basically put on the move. They are placed on anything which is moving, such as trucks, taxis, buses and even subway marketing. It also includes fixed static advertising at bus and train stations. Airport advertisement, which businesses use to address travelling audiences, is also part of this category. This type of marketing is often accepted by municipalities as it is a source of revenue to city authorities.

The fourth form of out of home advertisement is alternative advertising. It is found in stadiums, lunch trucks, other non-traditional formats and also on gas pumps. This form grants businesses the chance to reach consumers in places they do not anticipate.

Together, street furniture, transit and alternative media forms are responsible for a large sum of total outdoor revenue. As a matter of fact, some of these formats take up a larger portion of advertisements than the traditional billboards. Other forms, for example lunch truck advertisement get placed on large industrial food trucks which serve the public at break, lunch and later for their dinner. Billboard styles, out of hand supplies and samples are offered by these trucks.

A host of operators, located in different locations around the world, make up the outdoor promotion industry. Collectively, they represent all the major forms of outdoor promotion. They range from small, independent, family-owned companies to large publicly traded companies and multimedia corporations.

Given the ease with which they can get the message to consumers from relatively any point outside their home, out home publicity has become the most sought after medium of advertisement by advertisers. Several brands in sectors such as real estate and finance have become reliant on his medium. Its capacity to engage and influence consumers is appealing to them. Additionally, it benefits a lot of other people other than the advertisers.
