Bus Wraps & Gainesville's Potential Electronic Movement

By Robert Sutter

Billboards and bus wraps alike have more than shown how various methods of marketing can help companies stand out. These methods, in my mind, have shown just how effective various ways of advertising can prove to be, as long as the right methods are set in place. The city of Gainesville seems to be the latest in a line of cities that are starting to incorporate more digital methods in this regard. If you are curious as to what exactly this means, consider the potential implementation of digital billboards.

The Gainesville Times posted an article that spoke about the potential inclusion of electronic billboards. Real estate representative Tim Hill offered more information on the matter, making it a point to say that every billboard - provided the idea goes through - would be able to showcase up to six advertisements, each being given ten seconds of exposure in rotation. While there were many points that were brought up in the article, one of the most prominent that I have seen was the potential of them becoming distractions.

It's important to keep in mind that electronic billboards stand the chance of distracting drivers, which was one of the concerns that the articles mentioned. Companies along the lines of JMR Graphics can tell you that certain methods can draw the attention of the public more so than others. In addition, unlike bus wraps - which are a recommended method of advertising - electronic billboards could become too bright and throw off one's vision. What this means is that the design of the billboards in question has to be smart.

It's clear that these billboards will prove to be bright but I believe that such a quality can be managed. Keep in mind that these billboards should not showcase tremendous brightness during nighttime; due to the Sun's natural light, these items do not have to run off of electricity as much in this regard. As you can imagine, there have been various improvements in terms of technology. The article said that, because of these, the prominence of these items should not prove to be a concern.

Aside from advertising, it appears as though billboards can prove to be useful for other reasons. Yes, they will be utilized in order to promote the wares of various companies but is it possible that they can offer urgent news to those on the road? For instance, if there is to be unexpected snowfall during the day, the billboard could shift gears in order to inform people about that. This is just one of the many reasons why Gainesville should take it upon itself to approve this potential movement.
