History of the Pirelli calendar

By George Dodson

Calendars have been in the news quite a bit lately. This is because the Mayan calendar saw the end of an era and 2012. A wholesale change in the beginning of a new 5000 year period is what they predicted although they didn't predict the end of the world. Pirelli calendar is one of the most famous calendars that is not a topic of conversation.

The tire and Cable Company was founded by the famous Pirelli in 1872. The only people he employed at that time were 45. Thousands of people is what the company employs now and earns billions of dollars. In 1962 is when the company started the calendar as an advertisement ploy. Originally featuring tires, they aimed this calendar at key markets. Later in the calendars history, the photographer shot models on the beaches of Cote d'Azur. Sophia Loren was one of the most famous models to appear in the calendar. In 2007, at the age of 72, her decision to appear in the calendar was quite controversial. The Pirelli calendar was not stopped by that as its producers have always been ahead of their time.

The calendar was discontinued in 1974 due to recession resulting from the oil crisis. It wasn't until 10 years later that they started the calendar up again. Until it became more sophisticated, the calendar still featured tires in one way one way or another. The product was not necessarily shown finally.

You must keep in mind that the production run of this calendar was small and only key people that the Pirelli people wanted had this calendar. It was rare and in demand.

Eventually, this calendar became very famous around the world. Being part of the famous racing team is obviously part of the reason. Pirelli started using the best photographers and models for its production. It was during this time, the decision was to make a limited number of them and make them valuable. The calendars became collectibles. Among the models were Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Helena Christiansen.

The narrative changed depending on the photographer. Peter Bernard for example, a famous photographer shot in the wild landscape of Botswana. For the layout, he wanted a free spirit and a natural tone. The wild and the natural landscape were familiar to Bernard as he had lived in Africa.

Lead free paper was what the tire company printed the calendar. Pirelli wanted it to be eco-friendly. Being eco-friendly is what Pirelli wanted. Environmental friendly is one thing he made sure of the people shooting the calendar models. To offset the number of the emissions used for producing the calendar; he worked to protect a forested area in Costa Rico.

Shot in Brazil, the very latest calendars features Miranda Kerr. Depicting a playful attitude, the narrative features models posing themselves and eating bananas. Each year the Pirelli calendar has a different theme of womanhood. It's said to have a place of honor combining creativity, beauty and glamor. It's limited run and its restriction on ownership has added to the enticement.
